Building Refurbishment and Conservation
Building Refurbishment and Conservation |
Our view is that, with care, protected period buildings are capable of being adapted for full modern usage. We have been employed on the restoration and renovation of many protected period structures from underpinning Christ Church School to the conservation of the original harbourmasters house in Crofton Terrace, Dun Laoghaire. We have worked on Huguenot, Georgian, Edwardian, Regency, and Victorian buildings. The Presbyterian Trust has commissioned us to report on a number of brick and stone built Churches and to give them structural assessments of the stability of their spires. |

At the moment we are working on structures in Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square and Stephens Green as well as around the country and we have developed the expertise to provide suitable non-invasive details in sympathy and in harmony with the building, for the building structure must be capable of being adapted for modern usage. We are familiar with the techniques involved in underpinning foundations and the hoarding and shoring necessary to work close to existing structures. We have tied facades back, stabilised and strengthened roofs and floors. We are well acquainted with and can read the various types of cracks both old and new and can assess the implications of these cracks.

It is our experience that the introduction of the mechanical and electrical services into period buildings causes the most problems. Attention must be given to sensitive locations of chases for electrical conduits, vertical ducts, under-floor cable trays for cabling and computer wiring. We have developed techniques for accommodating these services within existing timber floors and for strengthening floors. |
